Sicily

A place to explore. A plan that leaves room to enjoy it.

The first Sicily decision is not which attraction to book. It is how much of the island you want to ask one trip to cover. A week can feel generous if you choose one side and exhausting if you keep changing bases. Start with the landscape and experiences you want most: a city and food trip, archaeological sites, time by the sea or an eastern route with Etna. Then choose the arrival point that makes that plan simpler.

Is Sicily right for your trip?

Choose Sicily for a trip with a distinct regional identity and enough time to stay in one area. If you only have a short gap in a mainland itinerary, compare the flight and transfer effort with saving the island for a dedicated holiday.

Suggested time: We suggest six or seven nights as a useful first planning window for one side of the island, not as a minimum rule. For a shorter visit, choose a city and one nearby outing instead of trying to cross Sicily.

Build your shortlist

  • Palermo: a city-led starting point in the west.
  • Catania and Etna: compare an eastern city-and-landscape route.
  • Taormina: decide whether it is an outing or a base.
  • A coastal stay: choose one that fits the rest of your route.

A western city-and-coast approach

Palermo is a logical place to begin comparing a western itinerary. Its cultural sights and food traditions give you a city chapter before you add another base. Decide whether you want more urban exploring, a coastal stay or archaeological time; that choice is more useful than building an all-island list of famous names.

An eastern route with a clear centre

Compare Catania, Taormina and the southeastern cities as different bases rather than interchangeable hotel searches. Decide which part of your trip is about the city, which is about the coast and whether Etna is a priority. Keep any volcano outing dependent on current local conditions and the operator’s stated arrangements.

One theme at a time

The island offers enough cultural and outdoor possibilities to support several trips. Select a main theme for each day: a city walk, an archaeological visit, a coastal pause or a guided landscape experience. A day with one strong focus leaves more room for meals, weather changes and the unexpected stop that becomes a favourite.

A route you can adapt

This outline is our suggested pace, not a fixed tour. Match it to your arrival time, interests and confirmed bookings.

First part of the week: settle into one base

Use the first few days for your arrival city and one carefully chosen outing. Avoid changing rooms before you have had time to establish a rhythm.

Middle of the week: one second base if useful

Move only when the new location solves a real travel need. Compare the transfer effort with another day trip from the first base.

Final part: return with room to spare

Finish somewhere that makes the departure practical. Keep the day before a flight lighter if the journey back includes an island connection, a long drive or several changes.

Getting around and choosing a base

Map transfers before booking accommodation. A rental car, public transport and guided excursions each suit different routes; none should be assumed to solve every location equally well. Check the actual service on your dates, the last part of the luggage journey and whether your property needs advance arrival coordination.

What to check before booking

For Etna or other outdoor experiences, check the stated route, transport, equipment and current operating conditions with the provider. Do not assume an advertised summit or particular viewpoint is always accessible. For island travel, read return arrangements as carefully as the outward trip.

Make food part of the day

Make food a reason to stay longer in a place rather than another activity to rush. A market or cooking experience can introduce ingredients you will recognise later in the trip. Confirm dietary requirements before booking, and choose experiences with a clear description of what you will taste or prepare.

Choose an experience with a purpose

A city food walk, a cooking class, an archaeological guide or an Etna outing can each become the focus of a day. Keep widgets relevant to the part of Sicily described on the page; a geographically distant offer should not dictate the visitor’s route.

Questions before you go

Can I see all of Sicily in a week?

You can travel around the island, but we recommend choosing one side for a first week. Fewer bases usually leave more usable time for the places you selected.

Do I need to rent a car?

That depends on the route. Compare the exact public transport and excursion options before booking accommodation; some city-led plans and some rural stays have very different needs.
